About the artist

Carrie Birdwell Mann started making boardshorts on a single sewing machine in 1961 after watching surfers shred through their trunks at Newport Beach. She developed SurfNyl — a nylon fabric tough enough to survive reef contact — and added a flat-front waist with a metal buckle that became the brand's signature. Sixty years later, the factory in Santa Ana still sews every pair by hand. No overseas production, no fast fashion, no compromise.
