Tim Marshall started sewing quilts in his Winona basement in 2007 after discovering the ultralight backpacking community online. The idea was radical at the time: ditch the zipper and the back insulation (you're lying on a pad anyway) and you cut the weight in half. Word spread through thru-hiker forums and trail registers. Today Enlightened Equipment employs 50+ people in a 50,000 sq ft facility in Winona, and every quilt is still made to order with the customer choosing fill power, temperature rating, shell fabric, and color.
