Details
Pietersite was discovered in Namibia in 1962 by Sid Pieters, after whom it was named. It forms through the replacement of the mineral crocidolite (a type of amphibole) by quartz, resulting in a pseudomorphic structure. The chatoyancy, or "cat's eye" effect, is caused by the fibrous structure of the stone and the way light is reflected off the inclusions.
